This cache is located in one of Chicago’s newest and maybe smallest park. This is not our favorite type of hide, but when you see the size of the park, you’ll understand. No need to trample any vegetation or go anywhere near the train tracks behind the fence. You may feel like your being watched. For what its worth, we did inform the nice folks in the nearby guardhouse of the placement and to expect a few visitors.
This hide will bring you to one of the oldest existing structures in Chicago. The Illinois-Indiana State line marker was erected in the early 1830’s when the state line was re-surveyed by order of Congress. This fifteen foot tall obelisk now stands 191 feet north of it’s original location, but still on the state line. It was moved in 1988 and was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2004.
The marker now sits in front of the old “Commonwealth Edison State Line Generating Plant” now known as the “Dominion State Line Generating Plant”. The plant was completed in 1929 and was built on a 70 acre man-made island. The State Line Turbine Generator was the largest of it’s kind in the world from 1929 to 1954. The main gate and original building are impressive examples of Renaissance Revival architectural style and the plant is one of the most distinctive landmarks along the South Shore.
As usual watch for muggles and obey the 'no parking' signs. Ample parking can be found directly across the street. There is also a public fishing access which is open weather permitting. It offers a nice alternate view of the Chicago shoreline. Have fun!
