Geocache Description:

Devil's Elbow State Park got its name from this point; you've looked at it a hundred times; it's probably in a few of your snapshots, too. It sticks out right between Heceta Head Lighthouse (pictured at right) and Sea Lion Caves -- an excellent spot from which to take a classic Heceta Lighthouse scenic, if you could only get there...

You CAN get there, if you're willing to do some serious ups and downs. Round trip is about a mile, but you have to gain and then lose about 200 feet, both out and back. Only a seagull could go directly from Park to Cache.

Here's the recommended route: Park at one of the viewpoints north of Sea Lion Caves, walk north along 101 for .2 mile to just outside the tunnel's south entrance. Follow the rough trail a couple hundred feet, then head almost straight up 200' to the top of the ridge. Follow an old road right out to the head of the elbow, then scramble down 200' to the cache. Reverse to return.

On the way back, consider dropping by the beach -- literally. At "Fork", follow a primitive trail over to a series of climbing ropes, by which you can rappel down to the Cape Cove Beach at low tide. (Not recommended for paraplegics.)

Warning 1: Do not even THINK about walking into the tunnel -- it is too narrow to fit an RV, a log truck, and you, no matter how thin or crazy you are.

Warning 2: Cliffs on Devil's Elbow drop 150 feet down to the rocks and surf. A perfect example is within 10 feet of the cache. [See gallery] This is no place for kids or pets, unless your pet is an elk.

Warning 3: "Heather's Cache" is only .1 mile from Devil's Funny Bone. However, don't count on getting from there to here -- there's a cliff and some ocean in between.
