An easy cache, if the trees don't upset your GPSr. School run times best avoided!! Bring your own pen.

The Spinney is a piece of land situated in the middle of the Coldfield near the top of Gibbett Hill that was to remain free of development from the time of the 1824 enclosures until the present day is known by local people as The Spinney, although such a name does not appear on any map. Originally it was about five acres in extent, but over the passage of time it has been reduced to just over three acres, and since 1857 when the shape of the spinney first appeared as such on any map, but without an official name, it has remained a pocket of woodland consisting of oaks and undergrowth. Until new roads were laid out near the spinney in the 1930s access was by means of a path running next to Middleton’s Brewery on the Chester Road and up the hill. Development of the Coldfield was unhurried until the coming of the railway in 1862 when commuters by rail and tram from Birmingham discovered Boldmere to be a nice rural retreat and house building gathered pace. By the 1930s most of the area had been developed and access to the spinney was obtained via three new roads: Antrobus Road, Oakwood Road and Maxstoke Road. This pocket of woodland was at some time after the First World War acquired by John White, of Handsworth and Max Nepolsky of Nottingham. Max Nepolsky was an ex Polish Army Officer and in gratitude for the shelter and hospitality this country afforded him he made a gift in 1930 of this small wooded area to the corporation of Sutton Coldfield. Today the spinney is a tranquil place where people can enjoy its beauty and take a quiet stroll FTF honours to graham1875. Congratulations on your 500th
