Few people are aware of the mysterious events of October 23, 1898
that unfolded only several miles to the north of the UNC campus. I
considered waiting until the 100th anniversary of the date, or
perhaps the 103d, to reveal what I know, but I could not.
Dr. Kastorius Pfeffermonger, noted German paleontologist, was
traveling by train to a conference at the University when he was
approached by several men dressed entirely in brown suede and
speaking with strange accents (possibly Circassian). One carried a
bird cage that, oddly, held a stuffed marmot. The other, limping,
wore a monocle, drooled, and had six ringed fingers on his left
hand.
Being an observant man, Dr. Pfeffermonger immediately suspected
that something was amiss. These must be agents of noted dinosaur
egg collector, Myala Khan! Offering a plausible excuse, Dr.
Pfeffermonger excused himself to his cabin and, noting the location
and thinking that he could return later to retrieve it, immediately
threw his treasured case from the window.
[The case contained: dinosaur eggs (including a rare variety
that grew only after being immersed in water), stickers and marbles
for his nieces and nephews, toy mice for the beloved cat of the
chairman of the UNC paleontology department, a selection of coins
from various realms, small devices that generate electricity
(miraculous!), and few other small items (including, oddly, a
traveling turtle).]
Alas, after being kidnapped and forced to work on Myala Khan's
marmot farm south of Khavarovsk, Dr. Pfeffermonger vanished from
the pages of history.
Perhaps one day Dr. Pfeffermonger's case will be found
