This cache is located on a secluded island, right in the middle of Donnell Reservoir.
In order to reach this cache, you will need a 4x4 and some type of watercraft.
WARNING: In order to get to this cache, you will need to cross some pretty extreme terrain, and you should plan to spend at least 1 night out at the island.
McAuliff Island is a spot that my family and I have been going to for years, and now it is the spot where my dad, brother and I camp every year if it is possible.
From the island, you get a majestic view of the 500' "little niagra" waterfall which is across the lake - it really is a spectacular spot.
Please be respectful of the lake, island etc. It is one of the more remote areas of the sierras and as such it is very clean. Like the old saying goes... "take only photographs and leave only footprints (and stuff for the geocache!).
As for the cache itself, you are looking for a traditional military ammo can.
**Note - we placed this cache in 2005, but after I got back from the trip, I lost the paperwork that contained all the coordinates, etc. Well, I have since found it hence the delay in placing and posting.
**Another Note - The road to Donnell has been closed for the last 2 years due to a landslide. Please check with the local forest service before attempting this cache to make sure the road is open.
Good Luck!
