Geocache Description:

I have permission to place the cache here. There is no need to enter the orchard. Log only cache, BYOP!

This cache is placed in loving memory of my husbands grandparents Grady and Lillie Auvil. Grady Auvil founded Auvil Fruit Co. with his wife, Lillie, in 1928. He always credited Lillie, who was a school teacher at the time, with supporting him through his many mistakes. They were married for 65 years. He established the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission and first cultivated the Granny Smith apple in the United States. In addition, Grady Auvil received the state of Washington's highest honor, The Washington Medal of Merit. In the early 1980s, Grady Auvil was one of the original advisory committee members for the Wenatchee Valley College Tree Fruit Program. He helped guide the college in the development of its teaching and demonstration orchards. Grady assisted with the development of WVC’s fully articulated tree fruit program with Washington State University, offering a bachelor of science in tree fruit management. In 1995, Grady was awarded an honorary degree from Wenatchee Valley College—one of only two in the history of the college. An estate gift of more than $2.9 million from local tree fruit leaders Grady and Lillie Auvil will fund Wenatchee Valley College’s agriculture programs at Wenatchee Valley College and scholarships and research at Washington State University An endowment has been created for the nearly $1.8 million gift to WVC, with the proceeds to be used in the further development and support of its agriculture programs, which include tree fruit production, tree fruit management, integrated pest management, sustainable organic fruit production, and the Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program. They were incredible people that I am blessed to say I knew!
