The woodland was called Carrington Small Wood up until the
1870’s and was part of the Carrington Estate, of which
Carrington House still exists under the name of Harbord House. The
woodland was used as a pleasure walk by Elizabeth Fry the famous
prison reformer when staying in Cromer in the 19th century. The
northern end of the woodland once housed a cottage, probably linked
to the lighthouse as the land in this area remained under the
ownership of Trinity House until 1937. In 1895 the Links Hotel was
built on the neighbouring hill and a bandstand was positioned in
the woods, the hotel burnt down in 1948 and is now the site for the
Cromer Country Club.
