Geocache Description:

Part of the Chorley Challenge - a cache in every Chorley village!

Eccleston

Situated near the road running from Chorley to Southport, Eccleston is divided into two parts. One contains the parish church of St Mary, more details below. In the more modern area, which is approached by The Green are St Agnes RC Church, which was erected in 1922., the Methodist Church built in 1900; the Carrington Centre (formerly a mill belonging to Carrington Fabrics) and Bygone Times, a large antiques centre. Open farmland surrounds the village, which has a new cricket field on the outskirts and a number of pubs and restaurants in the centre.

St. Mary's Church

The parish church of Eccleston is St. Mary the Virgin and is located on the south bank of the River Yarrow in open meadows on the north side of Eccleston. The original church on this site dates back to before 1094 but it was altered and expanded in the 14th, 18th and subsequent centuries. Nevertheless, the red sandstone church is beautiful as it is topped with grey slate roofing and a tower built of gritstone from Harrock Hill. The tower has no staircase and is reached only by ladder.

If the church is open, nip inside - it's worth a peep.
