With this cache, you get a quick find, a little bit of history, and a whole lot of public exposure.
Make the short flat walk along the sidewalk to the cache location. At the cache location, have a seat and enjoy the view to the west. Look closely and you will see the bluffs of the Mississippi River on the Iowa side. As you sit you will be looking at the highway and the former site of the Plank Road Toll House. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s tolls were collected from travelers using the then luxurious wood or “plank” road.
This was actually the second location for the toll house. In the late 1800s the toll gate was moved to the house because most of the local traffic was deliberately bypassing the toll via another road (Gear Street).
In 2002 the house from which the toll gate was operated was moved about a half mile west to make way for the realignment of US Highway 20 to its present location.
There is no cover in this location for discrete caching. Good luck avoiding the eyes of the muggles.
