Geocache Description:

HWY 93 Roadside, just north of Wells, NV. Cache is just over 1.5 miles from the epicenter of a magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck at Just after 6 am on 2/21/2008. Cache siting is on a small road with a partial paved apron to get off HWY. Not friendly to large vehicle (motor home, Semi) but you may get to pull over on the other side of the road, its up to you. Be-careful in muddy/snow conditions where your turning around. This is the 4th in my Epicenter series of caches.

VIDEO OF THE QUAKE AS IT HAPPENED !!!!

Below are links on youtube of the earthquake.
First is in Flying J truckstop. Clips are short I
think power went out is why it goes black so soon.
Second video watch guy run in a circle almost, semi truck rocks back and forth. I think he thought it was starting to move towards him. LOL.

USGS puts the earthquake at "Latitude: 41.1525N; Longitude: 114.8669W; Depth 6.7 km (4.2 miles). This location is approximately 6 miles (9 km) northeast of Wells" Which puts the GPS coords at N41 09.179 W114 52.020. HWY 93 runs within 1.5 miles of that. I talked to some locals and they are getting tired of the quakes aftershocks. It seems a handful a week felt by them for awhile. Even 2 in the last week and 1 today as I place this cache(3/15/08). The aftershock sequence is all over the place. With todays quake, a 3.3M, hitting at 3 miles ESE of town! The earthquakes are reported to be from “normal faulting”, which is the type of faulting that occurs typically in Nevada and other places where the crust of the earth is extending. The aftershocks may or may not each be from that. According to the USGS map these quakes seem to be between the Ruby Mountain Fault Zone to the West and the Independence fault zone to the east. The "normal fault" running thru the valley is not named on their website. As seen the aftershocks are migrating along the fault zone that was affected. Starting at main shock and working south. Some smaller ones north of main shock. From a report I read on this it seems this is the biggest quake ever recorded here in the NE portion of the state. P.S. Happy Caching.
