Geocache Description:

One in a series of places of interest around Dunfermline Town centre. Parking for all in this series is available in the town’s car parks. The co-ordinates above will take you to Dunfermline Abbey.

Dunfermline was selected in the 11th century by King Malcolm III for his new royal residence. When he married Queen Margaret in 1070 Margaret liked Dunfermline so much she set up a Benedictine foundation on this site. This was later transformed by her son King David I into what was intended to become the most important abbey in Scotland.

Work started in 1128 on the Abbey Church and the original nave still stands. Following her death, Dunfermline became a destination for pilgrims and she was canonised 250 years later.
Dunfermline Priory was raised to Abbey status shortly after her death and with the help of its royal patronage would become one of the wealthiest in the land. As such, Dunfermline Abbey Church was Scotland's answer to Westminster Abbey and became the favourite burial ground for Scottish royalty. Sacked and burnt in the 14th and 16th centuries, Dunfermline Abbey and Palace is now a majestic ruins. However, the nave of the Abbey Church was spared the devastation and it now leads into the new Dunfermline Abbey Church built in 1818. A memorial plaque here marks the final resting place of King Robert the Bruce (all but his heart which is in Melrose).

There is also a plaque under a tree marking the resting place of Sir William Wallace's mother.
