Bacchettoni
Bacchettoni sono dette persone esageratamente bigotte, ma da dove viene questa parola? Se andate a Firenze alle coordinate indicate troverete la spiegazione. Nel 1602 Ippolito Galantini, di professione tessitore, uomo pio, fondò una arciconfraternita che aveva sede a Firenze, alle coordinate di cui sopra. L’arciconfraternita era detta di San Francesco perché il Santo visitò nel 1221 il vecchio ospedale di San Paolo (non più esistente) cui la sede era adiacente. L’associazione aveva il fine di educare cristianamente i giovani tessitori, in un primo tempo, e successivamente tutti fanciulli. Avendosi imposto come regola il silenzio, i confratelli erano detti Vanchetoni (van-chetoni). Per meglio “educare” i giovani i membri dell’associazione usavano anche una bacchetta che usavano anche a scopo penitenziale. Per questo loro zelo, da Vanchetoni furono presto chiamati “Bacchettoni” e tale appellativo è rimasto ad indicare persone di un moralismo religioso eccessivo e zelante.
L’oratorio di San Francesco versa purtroppo in uno stato alquanto fatiscente, al suo interno dipinti del Volterrano, di Giovanni da San Giovanni e di Cecco Bravo, viene usato talvolta per concerti di musica jazz, può essere visitato suonando al custode.

“Bacchettoni” in italian language means bigots, but from where does this word come? If in Florence you go to the above coordinates you will find the solution. In 1602 Ippolito Galantini, a weaver, devote man, founded a religious association at the above coords. The company was named of Saint Francis because the saint visited the hospital of St.Paul (no more existing) in 1221 which was besides the seat.
The association had the task of the education of the young weavers, in a first time, and later all the boys. Having imposed themselves the rule of the silence, the members was called “Vanchetoni” (going in silence). To better “educate” the boys, the members of the asociation used a stick, used also for personal penitence. For their zeal they were called “Bacchettoni” (bacchetta=stick), and that name remained for indicating forever persons excessively zealous and moralistic.
The oratory of St.Francis lays in a rather abandoned condition, inside it paintings of Volterrano, Giovanni da San Giovanni, Cecco Bravo. It is used sometimes for concerts of jazz music, it can be visited ringing at the housekeeper.
