Luau Event Details:

Meet up at the Burning Bear Campground at 5:00 pm for an evening of fun in Geocaching Luau style.  Bring chairs and a beverage of your choice.  All geocachers are encouraged to attend this free dinner luau event, regardless of participation in the daytime 4x4 run.  Make sure you put on those Hawaiian shirts and/or some other Hawaiian attire as there will be a contest for best dressed.  Note: This event is not officially a camping event but camping is available on a first come first served basis both at the Burning Bear Campground and several other Campgrounds close by (more info on camping below).

If you plan to go on the daytime 4x4 run, that's great, but if not, you should still plan to spend the day in the mountains prior to the luau event.  There will be plenty to do for the day, including:

»

Hike one of the many trails near the campground (A number of trails into the Mount Evans Wilderness Area are accessible via Park County Road 62, these include: the upper trailhead for Rosalie Trail #603, Three Mile Creek Trail #635, Abyss Lake Trail #602, and the trail to the 14000’ Mt. Bierstadt.).

»

Hang out at the campground area (Chat with others who will be there for the day, Sit back and enjoy the mountain air, Have a picnic, Read a book, Play Horseshoes).

»

Make a caching run over Guanella Pass (Spend the morning caching around Idaho Springs and Georgetown and then make the beautiful drive over Guanella Pass to the campground on the other side of the pass).

»

Spend the day caching and exploring along route 285 (There are lots of things to see and many caches to be found along 285 from Bailey to Fairplay).

»

Plan your own route/caching adventure for the day.

Dinner will be served at approximately 6:00 pm.

Best Luau Attire Award - It's a Luau, so of course we will have this award.
The prize for the Best Attire Award will be a set of Trekking Poles.

"Will Attend Log":

Please include the following information in your will attend log:

»

Number of people attending the evening luau event.

»

If you are bringing a vehicle on the 4x4 run.

»

If going on the 4x4 run, would you like to run the difficult trail or the moderate trail (Please read info under "The 4x4 Adventure" below to help decide).

»

If you would like to ride along with someone on the 4x4 run.

»

If you have extra seats for the 4x4 run and number of extra seats.

Camping (Optional):

As was mentioned before, there are several places to camp near the luau event location, including the event location itself at the Burning Bear Campground.  The three recommended campgrounds that are on the same road as the event are: Burning Bear Campground (14 Campsites), Geneva Park Campground (26 Campsites, just North of Event Site) and Whiteside Campground (5 Tent Sites, just South of the Event Site).  All the campgrounds are first come first served and they are all self pay.  The event hosts will hopefully have the first few campsites (Sites 1, 13 and 14) at Burning Bear nearest the main road.  If you plan on arriving early in the week and camping, please contact RocketMan if you can help with commandeering those sites.

UPDATE 07-21-07:  The trail plans have been finalized and they have changed slightly from the original tentative plans.  Please see the updated information below, including final meeting locations and times.

Area Map:

Trail/Track Index:
White - Georgia Pass
Yellow - North Fork Swan Side Trip
Blue -
Middle Fork Swan
Red -
Number 10 Hill (S.O.B. Hill)

Planned Routes:

Moderate Group:
Up Georgia Pass Trail.
Side trip up North Fork Swan River Trail.
Side trip to a lookout area from North Fork Swan.
Return to Georgia Pass Trail.
Up to Georgia Pass.
Down South side to US 285.
To Burning Bear Event Site.

Difficult Group:
Up Georgia Pass Trail.
Up Middle Fork Swan River trail.
Up Number 10 Hill (SOB Hill) to Georgia Pass
Down South side to US 285.
To Burning Bear Event Site.
Note: A group of us ran SOB Hill last weekend (7/19) and the first .1 mile is definitely difficult, probably more difficult than Spring Creek that we ran last year because the obstacles are on a steep hill.  After the first .1 miles, the trail becomes moderate, but there are tight squeezes between trees and narrow exposed areas where you are tilted towards the edge.  Our trail leader n0wae is suggesting that you have at least one locker and a minimum of 3 inches of lift with 33 inch tires to do the run.  There will be vehicles with winches available if needed.  Two of us had to winch last weekend on the first attempt up the hill.  We expect it to take a few hours to get everyone past the first .1 mile.  If you get to the meeting area and change your mind about doing the run, you will still have the opportunity to join one of the moderate groups so don't fret.

With all of the caches along these routes, it will take some time to stop for each one and have the group log in.  The goal is to get to Burning Bear by 5:00 pm so the trail leaders will be keeping track of the time on the trail and may make route and/or cache stop adjustments as
necessary.

What to bring:

In addition to your 4x4 vehicle and any support equipment you see fit, don't forget:
- FRS Radio
- Lunch and Beverages
