Brothers Water is located in the Hartsop valley at the foot of Kirkstone Pass off the A592 lying just to the south of Ullswater and is classified in two ways: as one of Lakeland's smallest lakes or one of its largest tarns. It is a small body of water surrounded by rolling fells and larger mountains such as High Street. The lake is popular with fishermen for its resident trout and in July water lilies bloom profusely on the lake - a sight to behold.
Its name used to be Broad Water but apparently changed when, two brothers drowned in the lake in the 19th century. Whilst ice skating on the lake in about 1875 two more brothers drowned which prompted Dorothy Wordsworth to state "It is remarkable that two pairs of brothers have been drowned in that lake - Dorothy Wordsworth referred to Brothers Water as "the glittering lively lake".
"At the north eastern end of Brothers Water lies the village of Hartsop containing several seventeen century farm buildings and stone cottages. Some of the buildings still contain spinning rooms where the inhabitants would have made their own clothing, selling any surplus in the local market towns. The word Hartsop means "valley of the deer" which would have lived in the woodlands of the lower areas of the surrounding fells. On the western side of Brothers Water is Hartsop Hall, the 16th century building passed to Sir John Lowther in the 17th century.
The cache is placed beyond the stile and within sight of the Red Pit car park above Brothers Water - an excellent place to sit and admire the splendid view over the lake.
