Geocache Description:

Please observe all posted rules when visiting Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve and all other areas in the Hocking Hills Region. Due to the proximity of endangered plants to the trail surface, it is imperative to stay on the trails at all times. Failure to do so may result in citations and fines. Please enjoy responsibly

This cache is in Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve. The Gorge is considered one of the deepest in the State and is beautiful at all times of year. Conkles Hollow is located off of State Rt. 374 on Big Pine Road. The erosion of the sandstone over many years has formed this beautiful place for us to enjoy.

This gorge was created by years of erosion over its sandstone walls, There is only one way in and one way out. It narrows to a point in the back of the gorge where there is a waterfall most of the year. The sandstone walls are 200 feet tall on each side. There are two trails at Conkles Hollow, one is a paved handicap accessible path down the middle of the Hollow and the Rim trail goes all the way around the Hollow and offers breathtaking views. It also can be dangerous as you are sometimes close to the rim and caution must be used. This is a beautiful place at every time of the year. Especially after heavy rains. The waterfalls (there are several) are awesome. The sound in the back of the Hollow from the water is tantalizing. Always remember to obey all of the preserve rules and STAY on the path. And always CITO and Enjoy this wonderful place.

To complete this cache you need to complete two educational tasks.

1. As an option we would love for you to take a picture of yourself at Conkles Hollow and post. This is not a requirement to log the cache.

2. Count the number of Wooden Steps that lead to the Rim trail. These steps are on the right hand side just after the Information boards. There are several steps up to several levels. Count each wooden step not how many steps you take to reach the top. Email us the number of Steps

3. Entering the Hollow you will cross several bridges. The third bridge was built in memory of several people whose names appear on a plaque just before crossing the bridge. Please email us those names.

We would like to send a special Thanks to Mr. Johnson and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves for reviewing and approving this earth cache. We are grateful for this place and all the other preserves in Ohio.
