Calling all Geocrabbers
Grab your geocaching
bag and head out for the 'Deadliest Cache'. Okay for greenhorn
cachers, but do keep a close eye on the kiddies! No survival suit
is needed for this one. (Er, that is - if all goes well.)
The 2nd most dangerous job...
What is the 2nd most
dangerous job in the world? Fisherman! There are 71 deaths out of
every 100,000. workers. Alaskan Crab fishing is particularly
dangerous. Statistics for this one subset of the fishing industry
come in at a staggering 400 deaths out of every 100,000. workers.
(Timber cutting tops the dangerous industry list with an
accident rate of 118 per 100,000 workers, and the commercial
pilot industry (small planes) ranks in at number 3 with almost
70 deaths per 100,000. workers)
The Inspiration
This cache was
inspired by the Discovery Channel series 'Deadliest Catch' which
follows the daring true-life adventures of 8 Alaskan crab vessels
as they do battle with the treacherous Bering Sea. The show
highlights captains and their crews as they work at one of the
deadliest — and most lucrative — jobs in the world. On
a good day, a crab fisherman can earn around $1,000.
We watched a whole
season (or more!) all in one day during a Discovery Channel
marathon a couple weeks back - and decided there simply had to be a
cache in honor of 'the catch'.
