Ce spécialiste de la mise en boîte est né à Châlons. C’est d’ailleurs sur la façade de sa maison natale que vous trouverez l’indice dont vous aurez besoin pour la cache finale. Sur la plaque qui le représente vous remarquerez sans doute son nœud papillon un peu particulier qui fait référence au journal des loufoques qu’il avait créé en 1938.

This specialist in barminess was born in Châlons (During WW2, he was known in UK as Prince of Lunatics). You’ll find an indication on the front of the house where he was born. You’ll see him on the plaque above the shoeshop and certainly notice what an odd bow tie he is wearing, refering to the Lunatic’s magazine he created in 1938

Notre Second Metteur en boîte
En 1810, notre homme obtint un prix pour son procédé de conservation des aliments. Mais il ne prit pas de brevet laissant tout un chacun utiliser son invention. Son livre, « L’Art de conserver pendant plusieurs années toutes les substances animales et végétales », est un succès. Ce qui ne l’empêcha pas de mourir dans le dénuement le plus total.
L’appertisation est à l’origine de toutes nos conserves actuelles. Les Britanniques en substituant au bocal en verre d’origine la boîte en fer blanc plus légère et moins fragile lui apportèrent un perfectionnement indéniable.

In 1810, this man got a price for having dicovered a mean of preserving food. But he did not take out any patent so that everybody could use his invention. He published a successfull book, “ The Art of preserving every meat and vegetable for many years “. Nevertheless he died totally destitute.
This technology known as “appertisation” has been the starting point to existing preserved food. An improving came from UK by using tins that are lighter and less brittle than bottles used previously.
