This 400m hike with an elevation gain of 100m is quite a grunt
so take a water bottle if doing it in the summer, and I recommend
the use of a walking stick. Finding the trailhead will be a little
difficult as you have to drive through new subdivisions and many of
the roads aren't on maps yet.
Follow Husband Road all the way up the hill and turn off onto
Mt. York Drive. When you get to the playground, turn left on Mt.
Todd to Mt. Ida Drive, and follow it to the culdesac to park. From
the parking coords, you can use the new Middleton Mountain trail
system or follow the short paved road (to the left) that is blocked
off and turns into a 4 wheel drive dirt road. When placing the
cache, I had to use the paved section and continued walking south
east, passing the first fork that went straight up and used the
second fork up turning off to the left or North. I did, however,
come down the first road.
As of 2011, I have used the new trail up and it seemed a much
easier climb. Only problem is that you have to leave the trail for
the last 100m or so.
Note: I believe the hill is closed to all motorized vehicles
now. At one time it was a haven for dirt bikes and quads etc. This
area in Coldstream is actually a nature reserve, but the
residential developments around the hill are getting closer and
closer.
Make sure you take a camera! Remember that the views are worth
the huffing and puffing.
