Geocache Description:

Easy, short walk. Park along Iona Rd. not in the Reclamation plant's drive way. Look for the open glen and take a stroll.

Here at the edge of civilization in Sarasota County is a secret glen of live oaks, palmetto palms, deer, feral hogs, turkey, armadillos and Bald Eagles.

Also right here is Sarasota County's showcase of environment protection initiatives.

To the north is the Water Reclamation plant. This plant takes storm water runoff which is high in nutrients (which can cause algae blooms in the bay and Gulf) and pesticides. They clean it up a bit and then pump it all over the county for residents to use for lawn irrigation water. The lawns filter out the nutrients and pesticides cleaning the water even more before it eventually makes it down to the aquafirs or out to the bay.

To the south is the county's oil, and solid waste recycling plant where they take in everything from batteries, computers, TVs, appliances and recycle the materials for use in consumer and non-consumer products. Many of these materials if deposited in a land-fill are the chemicals and heavy metals that are polluting our fresh water.

Just south as well is the previous Sarasota County landfill (that would be the small Florida mountain you can see). This land has been now "Reused" for a paved landing strip for model airplanes, a planned park, and another showcase item is FP&L's first Solar Array that can produce electricty for about 80 homes.

All of this is actually hard to see like it is a secret hidden out here just like this little glen.
