The Friant-Kern Canal is a 151.8 miles long canal. It is part of
the Central Valley Project managed by the United States Bureau of
Reclamation. Its purpose is to carry water south to augment
irrigation capacity in Fresno, Tulare, and Kern counties.
The canal begins at Millerton Lake, a reservoir on the San
Joaquin River north of Fresno. The canal runs south along the
eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, ending at the Kern River
near Bakersfield.
The canal has a capacity of 5,000 cubic feet per second,
gradually decreasing to 2,000 cubic feet per second at the
terminus. It was completed in 1951. The canal can be seen from the
cache site.
Also located near the cache are the Fresno Canal and the
Consolidated Canal taking water from the Kings River to valley
farmers. In this area though, you can regularly see fishermen
tossing lines in from the canal bridges next to Trimmer Springs
Road. Unfortunately for them, it is against the law to fish from
the bridge. After all they could get in the way of some really good
geocaching.
Pull well off the road and stay away from the street and you
should have no problem grabbing this cache.
