Geocache Description:

This average-size cache is located in the beautiful Morgan-Monroe State Forest in southwestern Indiana. The entrance to the Forest is easily located on State Road 37 just south of Martinsville.

UPDATE (10/14/06): I took advantage of yesterday's crisp, Autumn weather and headed out to check on the status of the cache since there were some recent unsuccessful attempts to find it. I am glad to say that here over five years after being hidden, the cache is still intact and in great shape. By the way, I think I failed to mention it previously, but the cache is now a dark green US Army ammo box. Some time back one of our visitors kindly replaced the worn-out Sterilite container that had been torn up (perhaps by a passing animal?). If you have tried this one in the past but were unsuccessful, give it another go. It's worth it if only for the journey!
UPDATE (2/11/02): Because several trees had been felled in the area, a couple people wondered if the cache had been removed. But I am glad to report that I visited the cache on Saturday, February 9, 2002, and it will still there and in very good condition. So if you couldn't find it, go back and give it one more shot! :o)
This is a fairly challenging cache, and I would not recommend it to first-timers, to those who do not enjoy hiking, or to those with very small children. You must go off the main hiking trails in order to locate this cache. To give you the idea of the hiking distance involved, I walked over 3 miles when placing this cache. However, I believe it could be done in less than 2 miles. The terrain can be steep at times, and in certain areas keeping your footing can be a great challenge. There is also an abundance of briars, spider webs, and other things, so I would highly recommend wearing pants. When I was there, a little caterpillar tried to escape from the forest by hitching a ride on me. I found him inside my shirt during my drive home.... yeeeeuck.

Now that I have painted quite the bleak picture, let me give you a few good reasons to make an assault on this cache. First, there is the challenge itself. Being one of the harder caches around, you'll be able to say that you conquered it. Second, the MM Forest is absolutely beautiful. They have 4 or 5 hiking trails that take you through some incredible forest land. Perhaps you could plan to just go hike and picnic there for the day... and when you believe you are near the cache, just veer off into the woods and try to find it. While at the forest placing the cache, I saw a large buck, lots of squirrels, a chipmunk, and lots of beautiful flowers. Truly one of the loveliest places around...

The cache is a clear Sterilite container with a blue lid. The intial contents of the cache are as follows:

  • Log book with pen and pencil
  • 2 Rugrat dolls
  • Plastic bicycle fast food toy
  • Plastic slinky from outpost.com
  • Men's wallet
  • Mini video recorder cassette tape (90 mins.)
  • T-shirt (100% cotton, XL)
  • Purdue University golf tees, ball marker and divot digger
Don't forget to set a waypoint for wherever you park your car as well as anywhere that you decide to leave the trail. Also, I highly recommend bringing a compass and also picking up a forest map at the forest office. One last note... hunting is allowed in the forest. It would probably be wise to wear bright colors if you come during hunting season.

The hint below is a parking hint if you want it... Good luck all!
