This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico
Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks
(NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A
cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New
Mexico.
Visitors can camp, picnic, hike and bike among these pillars of
volcanic rock, some as high as 40 feet. A modern visitor center has
interpretive exhibits and programs, and an astronomy observatory
was added in 2005.
Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are
there.
* The spectacular rocks that are the prominent feature of the
park are called Kneeling Nun Tuff and were formed by an enormous
volcanic eruption 35 million years ago.
* City of Rock State Park was first to construct a permanent
astronomical observatory, consisting of a building with a
retractable roof, which houses a 14” telescope.
* Prehistoric people camped among the rocks thousands of years
ago and left evidence f their presence in the form of mortars,
smooth holes in the rock formed by grinding seeds with stone
manos.
Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day
Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will
be required.
If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure
to let them know you are a Geocacher.
Placed with permission.
