This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks (NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New Mexico.
Set in a forest of ponderosa pine, the park is a popular destination for family camping, fishing, hiking and cross-country skiing. The 35 surface-acre lake is well stocked with trout, and is great for canoeing. Also includes ADA accessible fishing piers.
Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are there.
* Take a Hike. Walk the two-mile length of the Hal Baxter Memorial Trail through the park. While out there,
* Find the Largest Rodent in North America. Or, at least, locate the series of beaver dams below the man-made dam, each a feat of engineering in its own right.
* Hug a Tree. Specifically, a Ponderosa Pine, especially one oozing sap, as it smells like vanilla.
Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will be required.
