Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks (NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New Mexico.

Best known for its sailing and fishing, the park is also popular with campers and hikers who enjoy scenic vistas along the 5.5-mile Rio Chama Trail that connects Heron and El Vado Lake State Parks. The 5,900 surface-acre lake is restricted to “no-wake” speeds, making it ideal for sailing, canoeing and kayaking.

Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are there.

* Rio Chama Trail/and suspension bridge. A fascinating 5.5 mile long trail along the Chama River Canyon connects Heron Lake to its neighbor to the south El Vado Lake. You can observe the magnificent suspension bridge that crosses the Chama River as well as many different micro climates that encompass the trails path.

* Abundant wildlife can be observed year-round.

* Osprey Nests. Heron Lake is the summer home to as many as 10 nesting pair of osprey during the spring and summer season. Osprey platforms have been erected to assist the osprey to locate and utilize suitable nesting habitat. An annual Osprey festival is held in mid July to celebrate the return of these magnificent raptors. Please stop by the Visitor Center for a map of nesting locations.

Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will be required.

If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure to let them know you are a Geocacher.

Placed with permission.
