This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico
Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks
(NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A
cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New
Mexico.
Visit this quiet desert oasis for camping, hiking, fishing and
picnicking beside the Rio Grande. It is a perfect base to camp for
visiting nearby attractions such as White Sands National Monument
and Fort Selden State Monument, a 19th century army post.
Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are
there.
* Leasburg Dam was built in 1908 to divert water from the Rio
Grande to irrigate crops in the north end of the Mesilla
Valley.
* The short (1/4 mile) Eagle Trail runs through the riverside
forest between the park’s two picnic areas, providing excellent
views of the Rio Grande.
* The Overlook Interpretive Trail traverses the edge of the mesa
in the park providing excellent views and trailside educational
displays.
Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day
Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will
be required.
If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure
to let them know you are a Geocacher.
Placed with permission.
