This cache is part of a series of caches placed by New Mexico
Geocachers in a cooperative effort with New Mexico State Parks
(NMSP) to celebrate New Mexico State Parks 75th Anniversary. A
cache has been placed in each of the 34 state parks around New
Mexico.
Set against the west-facing escarpment of the Sacramento
Mountains, the park features historical exhibits and a fully
restored 19th century ranch house. Exhibits feature prehistoric and
historic sites. Hikers can tackle the 5 ½-mile Dog Canyon trail,
which rises about 3,100 feet and offers spectacular views of the
Tularosa Basin.
Be sure to check the following points of interest while you are
there.
* Discover the beauty and diversity of native plant species in
the Chihuahuan Desert Garden.
* The historic Oliver Lee Ranch House provides visitors with a
glimpse into ranch life in the early 1900’s.
* Explore the Interpretive Nature trail, which runs alongside
one of the few perennial streams in the area. This riparian zone
allows plant and animal species not commonly seen in desert
habitats to flourish.
Since this cache is located within the State Park system, a Day
Use or Annual Pass, which can be obtained from any State Park, will
be required.
If you see any of the Park's staff while you are there, be sure
to let them know you are a Geocacher.
