HIKE OR BIKE! You can walk to this cache via an easy 15 min scenic walking track OR BIKE along an easy mountain bike trail to get to the same location. The bike trail is marked as a Grade 2, with gentle climbs and easily avoidable obstacles such as rocks and potholes. Most beginners should enjoy the ride. Popular with families. If biking, a mountain bike and approved safety helmet are required PLEASE DO NOT HIKE ON THE MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS, AND DO NOT BIKE ON THE WALKING TRACK.
Rotorua was home to the 2006 UCI World Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships and the Whakarewarewa Forest Mountain Bike Trails are among the best in the world. The core network of trails wind through Redwoods, larches, douglas fir and most of the beginner trail's are located here near the carpark. Further out, its an adventure playground for mountain bikers, with many exciting trails with Grades of 3 - 5 which are much more technically challenging and suitable for experienced Mountain Bikers. Always ride to your ability. Predominantly dry, hard packed surface through summer, muddy patches after rain and during winter.
A map of the core trails only is on display at the Waipa Mill Carpark, but a map of the all of the trails is available at Visitor Centre on Long Mile Road and highly recommended.
Park at the main car park, at Waipa State Mill Rd, and walk/bike out across the bridge.
IF YOU ARE WALKING: Cross the bridge, and carry on for a few more metres until you see the walking track to your right, marked with a yellow arrow . The trail is well defined, and mostly gentle, the bonus is that it is a scenic walk that is not often too busy, and different species of trees have been signposted for your interest. Look for yellow arrows which are clearly visible at intersections. From time to time you may see bikers winding through the forest on nearby tracks. Please keep to the walking track, and do not deviate onto the mountain bike trails. When you come to a T intersection (joining a forest road) follow the yellow arrow - you are now near the cache site.
Once you have located the cache you can return the way you came, or complete the yellow arrow track (5 - 10mins), - turn LEFT when you exit the track at Nursery road, and then turn LEFT again at Pohaturoa Road - this will take you back out to the carpark.
IF YOU ARE BIKING: Take the Tahi mountain bike trail. (Grade 2) This track turns off to the right just past the bridge. From the first clearing, the Tahi track continues down the forest road and brings you near the cache site. Bike time 10 - 20 minutes.
BECAUSE THIS IS A SINGLE TRACK, YOU CANNOT RETURN BACK THE WAY YOU CAME. Once you have found the cache, you can return to the Tahi trail and complete the trail by following the signs (the trail continues after you come out at the seat). When the trail reaches completion at Pohaturoa Road turn LEFT, this will take you out to the carpark. Bike time 15 - 20 minutes from cache.
For a shorter route take the main forest road that heads north/north west from the cache site. Continue past the seat then turn LEFT at the main intersection into Pohaturoa Road, this will take you out to the car park. Bike time 5 - 10 minutes from cache.
HIKING OR BIKING WILL BRING YOU TO THE SAME FINAL LOCATION. The cache is located 17 paces NE (northeast).
Cache is inside a green 1.L treasure chest shaped box, with Geo-cache written on the outside.
