Geocache Description:

Alloa's South African War Memorial. Eleven local men lost their lives during the Boer War in South Africa between 1899 and 1902. The sculptor was William Birnie Rhind.

This memorial sat "forgotten" on the outskirts of Alloa for many years. The area was very overgrown and prone to vandalism. However, in the Autumn of 2001 work started on it's restoration thanks to an award from the "Civic Pride Scheme". The area around the memorial was relandscaped, and there is now an open seating area where people can admire the architectural significance of the memorial.

To celebrate it's restoration a special service was held on Friday 31 March 2002 - the 100th anniversary of the signing of the "Vereeniging Peace Treaty" which led to the end of the war.

Parking available nearby, however please take care with the roads as this can be quite a busy area for traffic at peak times. Probably not a good idea for those with young children who might run into the road.
