Geocache Description:

Excess drainage water from irrigation has been pumped to the Noora Evaporation Basin to reduce the impact of salinity on the River Murray since the early eighties. Now water from Salt Interception Schemes is also pumped to this location.

The Noora Basin has over the years provided a haven for birds, but especially prior to the Salt Interception schemes, there were times, when there was little need to pump water out here due to both improved irrigation practices and to the natural wetting and drying cycle of the wetlands. I can remember a hue and cry in local media about birds being stuck in mud and suffering. There was a demand from bird lovers to pump water out to Noora and this did occur.

There are now several Salt Inception Schemes (SIS) and evaporation basins throughout the Riverland. The SIS schemes pump out about 15,000 megalitres of salt water a year (or about 15,000 olympic sized swimming pools) from watertables near the near river. This results in about 400,000 tonnes (or the equivalent of 40,000 full garbage trucks) of salt being kept out of the River Murray each year. Noora Evaporation Basin plays a significant role in this process.

Would be a nice view If I cropped the foreground!
