M&SWJR Spine Road Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RedCableTie: I have been watching GZ as I drive past for some time now. Yesterday I visited the car park next to GZ and there are no signs that GZ will ever become available again. Hence it is now time to give up on this one and archive the cache in case someone else wants to place a cache in this area - being on a cycle way made out of the former MSWJR makes it an attractive geo-caching area.

Geocache Description:

The cache is at the location where the Spine Road crosses the former Midland & South Western Junction Railway (M&SWJR) – now a footpath and cycleway. The M&SWJR opened in December 1883 as the Swindon & Cheltenham Extension Railway and closed in 1963. The Spine Road is a new alignment – the original railway crossing at this point was a multi-arched brick bridge carrying a minor road over the railway.

Parking is available at the cache location by driving through one of the arches. There are steps giving access up on to the old bridge giving views around the local (very flat) countryside.

This location provides an alternative starting point for the caches placed on the former railway line (to the south-east) and around Cerney Wick by RoobyDoo. The footpath along the former railway line also links with the Thames Path about 1½ miles to the south-east giving access to a number of the caches placed by the Lydford Locaters. Although the former railway line has been made up as a footpath and cycleway it can be wet and muddy in places – boots or wellies are recommended for walking along it.
