This cache is located near the location of the CPR Train Station in Marathon
As you will notice that train station no longer exists. The station was torn down in the early 1990’s shortly after the last passenger trains went through Marathon. CPR’s “The Canadian” stopped running along the north shore of Lake Superior on January 15, 1990. At that time the “Canadian” was transferred to the CNR line. All passenger train service from Winnipeg to Toronto now goes via the CNR railway line, north of Marathon. The closest point now to Marathon to regular cross-Canada train service is from Hornpayne, Ontario, a 2.5 hour drive from Marathon.
Passenger train service through Marathon, probably ran for over 100 years, ever since the railway was built through Marathon (or through Peninsula as it was called at that time) in the mid 1880’s. (I will update the history of the train station as I find new information)
Now back to the cache. The posted coordinates will get you to near the location of the old train station. From that point, you must go in a heading of 179° true north for 87 meters where you will find the cache. PROJECTION WAS UPDATED ON APRIL 7, 2009.
The cache is a very small camouflaged micro container. You will need to bring your own writing instrument since there is no room for a pencil or any trading items in the cache.
