Geocache Description:

This is a location in the Metro NY Geocaching Society series celebrating the many feature films that were filmed on New York City streets. Visit us at: http://www.metrogc.org

The 2007 Academy Award nominated movie "August Rush" was about a 12 year old boy who turned out to be a musical prodigy.

His mother, Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) is a brilliant cellist who has just finish performing a concert in New York City. Lyla goes out on the town with her girlfriend and end up at a party near New York's Washington Square. She meets his father, Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) an Irish guitar player. They share the love of music and end up falling in love and bonding together that night. It was the most wonderful night in Lylas life. Lyla must hurry back to the hotel where her father Thomas (William Sadler) is waiting for her. Lyla promised to meet Louis in Washington Square, but her father forces her to go to her next concert. They are like two ships that pass in the night, never to see each other again, except for the fact that Lyla is now with child. Sadly, Lyla is in a car accident and the unborn child is lost. Eleven years pass and Lyla's father is on his death bed, and he must tell her the truth that he secretly gave Lyla's baby boy up for adoption. August Rush (Freddie Highmore) is her child, who was born with the gift to hear music all around him. He believes that he will find his parents if they only hear his music, because they are truly bonded by their music.

There were a number of Manhattan scenes but perhaps one of the most important scenes is when young August discovers a gospel choir doing their thing...and they discover him. The leader of the choir gets him into Julliard. All of the scenes in the church, the stained glass windows and most important, the organ that he taught himself to play, are in this church.

The church of the First Unitarian Congregational Society of Brooklyn, was built in 1844 and cost $34,950 plus the $6,000 for the property. It was named "Church of Our Savior" because in 1844, a church had to have a 'church sounding name' to be considered legitimate. The site where it stands was once the ramparts of Brooklyn Fort, the most important British fort erected in the area during the American Revolution. Its earthworks extended from Cadman Plaza to Henry Street.

The cache is a magnetic key box that is easier to feel than to find and is available even when the gates are closed. However, do not attempt it on Sunday mornings from 10 am to 1 pm. During those hours, you can come in and see this magnificent building for yourself and maybe even hear the organ. (www.fuub.org)

If the top comes off, carefully twist it back on (the pin is in there)

PLEASE NOTE: You may find 2 cache containers. This was because we had many DNF's when finders returned the cache to the wrong place. Once you find one of the two, sign the log. You DO NOT have to search for a second box. If found, just sign one log.

Placed with permission--I was on the Board of Trustees.
