Geocache Description:

Cache and dash or stop to admire the view.

Fremington is an old village about 3 miles west of Barnstaple and was probably better known in times gone by than it is today. It was famous for its Fishely Pottery using clay from its own pits in the east of the parish. This clay was also used for Barnstaple's Barumware.

Fremington Quay has now been redeveloped for recreation and conservation. The old railway line has become part of the Tarka Trail and it still uses the old iron railway bridge to cross the pill. The railway sidings have been grassed over, paths and cycle tracks created. A replica railway station has been built to house the Fremington Quay Heritage Centre and Cafe.

The village stands on the estuary of the Taw and was known, in the time of the Saxons, as Freemanton, it was a borough in the time of Edward III.. The pulpit of the local church dates back to the 15th century and it has a Norman stoop in it's south porch. The main church was restored by Sir G. G. Scott in 1867.

Views from this cache site are over the Taw Estuary, Fremington and the neighbouring village of Bickington.
