Found out about this site by accident, and can't believe I didn't know it existed just a few miles from my home.
The site:
Known as the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory. This site is the only National Historical Landmark in Gaithersburg and is significant especially to astronomers. I don't know much at the moment, but will update the cache page once I do learn more. This is an Observatory and apparently one of the main research items was to detect and measure the Earth's wobble along the north-south axis. The small building in the fenced areas is designated a historical structure and was built in 1899. Observations were taken until 1983.

NOTE:
THE CACHE IS NOT WITHIN THE FENCED AREA. DO NOT TRESPASS ON THE PROPERTY.
The cache is hidden, but not exactly well hidden. Try to be a little sneaky about it. Best times to go are weekends when the nearby school is not in session. Try also, not to approach it from the street side. The cache does have sticker bushes around, which I tried to clear somewhat. I recommend children non retrieve this cache, although they can follow you to the cache area. Same with pets.
The container is a typical rubbermaid type, but purchased from a dollar store, so be sure to put the lid on well.
