Northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

chaosmanor: We started to set up these caches nearly a decade ago. They have not been nearly as popular as we had hoped, possibly because it takes a bit of a drive to get to Tuna Canyon Road, as it is one-way going down-hill. Several of them have disappeared more than once. We no longer come out this way very often, so we have decided to archive the entire string, in the hope that someone else will think up some really cool idea for this really cool road.

The replacement cache was here, not quite where our original was, but close enough. It has been pulled. Thanks to everyone who came out to get a Smiley [:)]

Geocache Description:

At the point on Tuna Canyon Road where it starts being one-way heading downhill. And no, it isn't up the bank! {154/139}

This easy cache is pretty-much the sort of cache you would expect to find here, and pretty-much in the place where you would expect to find it. Log only, so bring your own writing instrument; please, no stickers or stamps.

This is the first of what we hope will be a string of caches down this scenic road. There's lots of room for caches, but you can't get to any of them by traveling up the canyon. You have to go on Topanga Canyon Road, then turn on Fernwood Pacific Road, a half-mile south of the post office building. Stay on this and it eventually becomes one-way; when you get to Saddle Peak Road, continue straight ahead; don't turn right. You can stop and get this without going on the one-way section, but once you pass through the gate (usually open, but occasionally closed in bad weather), it's 5½ narrow, winding miles to the beach. Ashley's Malibu View cache (GC1A2QD) is near the bottom; this is the best way to go to get to it.

BTW: Tuna Canyon has nothing to do with fishing; "tuna" is Spanish for the fruit of the prickly pear cactus. But the name is too good not to make a bunch of puns out of it

We also want to note that the Northern (or Atlantic) bluefin tuna is a threatened species. Pollution, overfishing, as well as illegal fishing in areas where fishing is officially banned, have reduced populations in many areas. They are highly prized in Japan; a single adult can fetch over $100,000.

Have fun! Enjoy the drive
