Geocache Description:

Caversham Airfield - nice easy find, please take the time to read about the history of the place on the cache page.

The cache container is a 980ml tupperware style container which contains a log book, pen and cache stash note.

Track to the cache is well walked by the local Kangaroos so is nothing difficult at all, the main reason I placed the cache here is in appreciation of the surrounding Airfield.

HISTORY

 http://www.ozatwar.com/airfields/middleswanairfield.htm

A Memorandum to the Secretary, the Department of the Interior, dated 7 August 1942 indicated that Requisition No. D.W.B. 86/42-43 detailed the following works to be built for the Royal Navy and the United States Navy:- A parent aerodrome and four (4) dispersal fields in the Fremantle area, with hard surfaced runways and aircraft dispersal facilities at each site, together with Building and Engineering Services, in accordance with Plans and Schedules to be supplied, at an estimated cost of £210,000; the work being Priority A.1.

Item 1658. Middle Swan was to be the parent airfield with the following satellite airfields:-

 Beverley

 Bindoon

 Gin Gin North

 Mooliabeenee

A Memorandum to the Commander Aircraft, 7th Fleet, US Navy Headquarters, Grace Building, York Street, Sydney dated 3 April 1944, advised the following progress with the construction of a Fleet Air Arm Base in the Fremantle area at Middle Swan:-

 MIDDLE SWAN (Parent)

Location:     4 miles N.N.W of Midland Junction

 Position:     Latitude 31º 50 ½" S., Longitude 115º 58 ½' E.

 Runways:     52ºM., 132ºM., 180ºM., each 5,000' x 150', primed.

Dispersal Bays     25 M/B Hardstandings complete. Gravelled taxi-way to dispersal complete.

 Accommodation     Nil.

On about 15 May 1944, Western Area Headquarters advised that RAAF Headquarters had approved:-

"use of Middle Swan airfield by the United States Army Air Corps until required for other operational purposes. AOC has requested immediate provision water supply 750 personnel estimated cost 500 Pounds and provision hard standing 200 feet by 150 feet, cost 200 Pounds."

In later years after the war, it became known as Caversham Airfield.

The Western Australia Sporting Car Club (WASCC) held the Victory Grand Prix on a makeshift circuit at Middle Swan airfield on 7 April 1946. It was attended by 60,000 people. In 1956 the WASCC obtained a lease for Caversham, which was then converted into a permanent track. The aircraft parking bays were connected by sealed track to become part of the racing circuit.

The Australian Grand Prix was held at Caversham in 1962. This was the same year as the British Commonwealth Empire Games which were held in Perth. The track was resume by the Commonwealth and handed over to the Department of Army in about 1968.

The remains of the old Middle Swan Airfield will soon disappear as it is apparently destined to become a housing estate.

Full Description & Details

On the date aforementioned 12 of us saw an intensely bright shield-like object swoop down from the heavens against a brilliant blue sky. It then seemed to slow significantly and seemed to hover at the far end of Caversham airfield whilst we were looking at three gliders.....actuallly sailplanes which were thermalling in rather weak thermals and slowly gaining height. All of us, bar one person were astounded by what we saw. I had never heard of flying saucers at 16 years of age. One of the viewers was a very experienced Second World War Spitfire-pilot and a top glider pilot as well. He seemed to take it quite calmly and later explained that when he became a bomber pilot and did sorties over Germany they occasionally saw "Foo-fighters " which flew around their bombers {Lancasters} and many of these "Foo-fighteres" were shield-like and ranged in apparent size from some 2 feet in diameter up to approximately 12 to 14 feet.

This discoid or shield-like object then slowly flew over us and to the far end of the airfield quite slowly and made a slow-speed skipping motion much like a stone skipping on water. The most amazing thing then happened. The discoid craft seemed to grow even brighter than before. Now with hind-sight it was as if it was drawing on even more power and seemed to be surrounded by a huge corona of electrical plasma or force-field. Then it shot heaven-wards at a terrific speed in several seconds and disappeared. I was visibly shocked and several of the crowd said upon looking at me "You've gone quite pale Rich!" That's the most amazing sight I have ever seen and that sighting will live with me always.

 Witness Background

I was 16 year old school-boy at the time and had been and still am very interested in Science in General and flying as well.

Other Comments

I believe that countless worlds could be occupied by Sentinent creatures some of which could easily be far advenced in Science and able to travel great distances and at speeds far greater than the speed of light. Remember those old addages........One should not wash more than once a week or your bones will go soft.....Man can not travel faster than a galloping horse or the man will die......Man cannot travel faster than the speed of sound or he will die. All these beliefs have proven to be wrong. Man will be able to travel far faster than light when he learns how to use the vast electromagnetic currents that permeate so much of space. It is these currents that the Flying-saucers and gigantic Mother-Craft use, and have been using for Eons of time.
