Geocachers get-together on Friday afternoon 18 April, including an (optional) overnight camp with BBQ/Braai while the nights are still cool, and a “dash for the cache(s)” on Saturday morning to find freshly hidden geocaches in the area. Those who feel up to it can take the opportunity to walk to Pirelli either on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, although this is not the objective of the Event cache.
The coordinates mark a set of abandoned farming terraces, a perfect place to pitch your tent for the optional overnight camp including a BBQ / Braai for those cachers interested in exchanging tall caching adventure tales around a roaring camp-fire.
There are also some great new caches in the area such as "Boulder Bouncing", “Jebel Suymayni” and the “C.C.C.C. cache”, so plenty to do on the way in.
All participants are also encouraged to hide a new cache of their own on the way into the Event cache either in the Hatta or al Ain/Mahda area (depending on where you are coming from). At the end of the BBQ there will be an exchange of coordinates so that on Saturday morning we can all dash off to try to be FTF on some of the latest caches hidden in the area. We will also hold a “trackables” convention, so be sure to bring along any unusual or new geocoins and/or travel bugs you have recently found or created.
To reach the Event cache site, you will have to enter the Omani enclave via either the UAE-Oman border post near Hatta or al Ain. Oman-resident cachers will be able to reach the site without crossing borders by taking the turn off to Buraimi from the Sohar - Shinas road and turn off to Mahdah just beyond the village of Hail. All those attending will have to turn off the asphalt road at N 24 36.345’ E056 01.750’. After about 30m stay right and drive the last 2 km over a dirt track. While we have seen locals push their Toyota Echo's over worse roads, a 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended to reach the campsite. We can arrange a shuttle service with 4WD cars from a parking spot near to the asphalt road to the Event cache / campsite.
There is no mobile phone reception at the camp site, however, we will have a Thuraya phone available for emergency contacts. The number is +88
For those coming from the UAE please have your passport with valid residence visas with you along with the car insurance form showing that the car is insured for both the UAE and Oman. More often than not the border guards will just wave you through but don’t count on it!
The Pirelli cache is the one but oldest cache in the Middle East, hidden on 4 September 2001. It has given great pleasure to those intrepid cachers willing to make the 45-minute walk through one of the most beautiful wadis in the Hajjar Mountains to find the cache. Although it is not a very difficult walk, only 12 cachers (among them a 7 year old) have up to now successfully found the cache since 2001, apparently because it is so easy to take the wrong turn on the way in! You may want to consider taking the opportunity to try this cache either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
Please confirm or otherwise by posting a note that you are planning to come along for the walk and/or overnight camp-out, so we can estimate how much coals we should bring along. Please also mention if you are coming in a low-slung 2WD and would like to get a lift for the last 2 km.
