Geocache Description:

A simple multi designed to take you on a stroll around some of the less-known parts of Dunedin's Upper Botanic Gardens.

This trail avoids the highlights of the Upper Gardens. It won't take you past the Azalea Garden, Balch's Rhododendron Island or the Cherry Walk. If you've got children with you, you'll have to detour to say "Hello" to Sid (the sulphur crested cockatoo) at the Aviary. (S 45° 51.475' E 170° 31.345')

A toilet is available from dawn to dusk at S 45° 51.519' E 170° 31.311'.

You may find a Dunedin Botanic Garden Visitor's Map useful- pick one up from the Information Centre in the Lower Gardens (open 10am to 4pm every day). Alternatively, a photo of the Upper Gardens map is downloaded for you to print out and take with you.

This 1 hour wander is roughly 1.5 km with a total climb of about 80 m, and some steepish slopes. It could be run in fifteen minutes, but we hope you will use it as an excuse for a pleasant afternoon's exploration of the gardens. All waypoints are permanent artificial objects. There are clear descriptions, so even if your GPS has reception problems you'll have no difficulty finding the waypoints.

All the waypoints are on good tracks, suitable for a mountain buggy-type stroller if you have an extra adult to lift it over the occasional step. Getting to the final cache requires a Clayton's "wilderness experience" through "untracked bush" (hence the increased overall difficulty and terrain rating). We encourage families to use the approach hint, which gives the safest approach route.

The final cache area has poor reception (the cache is placed to 6.0 m accuracy). However, the large object where the cache is placed will be easily spotted because it is different from most of its surroundings. The cache is a black 2.3 litre snaplock container. It should not be visible- please conceal it again after you find it.

We have cleaned up the cache area and approaches, but unfortunately there is certain to be more broken glass. Don't go barefoot! We have left supermarket bags in the cache to use for rubbish collection.

NOTE: The hints are deliberately explicit, so that tired children will be able to find the cache safely and easily. Grown-up cachers will not need to decrypt the hints.

WARNING: Road crossings required. Watch out for speeding cars and supervise children carefully.
