Geocache Description:

A step back in time

Koolywurtie has 2 interpretations - "Dirty Fishes' tail" or the more picturesque - "Where Rocks meet the Sea". At this site you will see a "mini" township (unfortunately though, it never "developed" and grew into a township) In 1889, the Methodists built a chapel on land given by the Brown family. The first service was conducted in 1876 but it wasn't until 1889 that regular services commenced. Koolywurtie Church was a converted 2 roomed cottage, made to look very church like and the original seats, made by Mr Herring are still in use today. Even today, there are regular Harvest and Thanksgiving Services held here. Adjoining the church is a Pioneer Park, and this area has been planted with varieties of trees and shrubs native to the area. Of particular interest is the Koolywurtie School. It is here that pioneer aviator - Harry Butler was reared and educated. On August 11, 1919, Harry "buzzed" the students of the Kooly School (called Koolywurtie College) and from "The Red Devil", dropped a note conveying his best wishes to the pupils at his old school. In all, 21 teachers taught 179 pupils in the school until it was closed in 1942. In addition to the Kooly Tennis Courts, there was also an Annual Fox Hunt held nearby at Port Rickaby.
