How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

We'd like to try something a little different with this event. All Scouts - boys and girls alike - have to learn about the environment and take part in various community service projects during each level of their Scouting careers. We are combining a "Green-Up" effort with some fun added in. The best part of Scouting is OUTING!

"Cache In Trash Out (CITO) is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers have been dedicated to cleaning up parks and other cache-friendly places around the world. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!"

Bolton Valley will be promoting the event in their corporate newsletter. TKDScouter and I will be promoting the event with the Vermont Councils of both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Our goal is to team a couple of geocachers with a Scout family to work together in the clean up effort and then head out for a couple of caches (10 will be placed and cache sheets will be available at the event). Geodogs welcome everywhere except inside the baselodges.

We will provide trash bags and we have permission to use Bolton Valley's dumpsters in several areas. Scouts - dress in your class B (T-shirt) uniforms. Everyone else wear something you don't mind getting dirty. Work gloves are recommended for everyone. We have access to several restrooms. If you are not able to come early enough to help with the clean up, come anyway, enjoy lunch, and team up with a Scout family for the afternoon. (Teaming up with a Scouting family is not required. Cache only as you are comfortable - no pressure. )

Bolton Valley is on privately owned land and we have permission to place caches there for the event. These caches will be made available on the afternoon of the event to give the event participants (especially the Scouts) the chance to experience a FTF. The FTF prizes in the caches will be Scout and CITO related. Please be mindful of geocaching etiquette and Scouting's Leave No Trace rules. The success of this event will impact the permanence of the caches and possible future like-events. Have a FUN day!!!

Directions (click link)

Contacts - geocachers please use our geocaching accounts. For everyone else who can view this page, but not the posted coordinates, we will be meeting just outside of the main base lodge at the top of the access road. E-mail roostersting at deannamec@comcast.net or TKDScouter at acsalgado@verizon.net to let us know how many people are in your party and what you will bring for the potluck so that we may plan accordingly. Check this site again just before the event for any new information we may receive.

Please bring chairs for the lunch and prizes. There are a limited number of picnic tables available for our use. Insect repellent is highly recommended! (Lavendar oil is an all natural alternative.)
