An opportunity for you to see some of the sights and points of interest in and around Palmerston North’s city centre square (The Square), this 5-waypoint multi will lead you to a sneakily hidden, small, log book-only cache in an adjacent area.
NOTE: the cache is not at the listed coordinates; the coordinates provide a point of interest and a possible place to commence your cache hunt.
Black Sheep Design's premises used to be in nearby offices, and a sign indicating their presence here was quite adjacent to the cache location. Things never stay the same do they? Black Sheep Design have moved - not so far away though, take a look around and you'll probably spot their new offices. So, as at 29 Sept 2012 I've added a "was" to the cache name and I have changed the clue. For interest sake, the clue used to be 'every family has one'! The Square has been the subject of an extensive makeover that has caused a good deal of controversy amongst the citizens and ratepayers. The makeover is complete now and you can use this caching experience to enjoy this greatly enhanced central city common.
You are collecting data that will allow you to solve the final coordinates for this:
S 40 21.ABC
E 175 36.DEF
The data is collected at 5 waypoints, each of which is given in the table below, and summarised here for your convenience
WP1: S40 21.316 E175 36.669
WP2: S40 21.458 E175 36.513
WP3: S40 21.385 E175 36.725
WP4: S40 21.404 E175 36.732
WP5: S40 21.374 E175 36.673
The cache involves easy walking on paved surfaces and, dependant on the order in which you choose to visit the waypoints, is likely to take you 15-20 minutes. Entirely suitable for the junior geocachers, as well as the more senior members of your team, and all but the final cache location is wheelchair accessible.
At waypoint 1: collect two pieces of information that will allow you to build the final coordinates of the cache. First, locate the stone that commemorates the proclamation of the borough of Palmerston North as a city. Note the date on the base of the stone and take the third digit from the year; this is E. Second, and from another commemorative stone, note the date of the day that the king was crowned. This number minus 2 is B.
At waypoint 2: note the years that Gertrude was born and died. Take the third digit from her year of birth and subtract this from the third digit of the year in which she died. This number is F.
At waypoint 3: what percentage of the population? This is D.
At waypoint 4: the year of the death of the chief is your interest. Take the last digit of this year, this is C.
At waypoint 5 (the final waypoint): note that the then Governor General took a part in proceedings here on one day in August 2005. You need to use the second digit of the date of that day. This is A.
OK, that’s it, you’ve got all the data you need for the final coordinates for the cache. If you want to check you have it all correct, then check that all your data sums to 22. Now go find the cache.
PLEASE NOTE WELL:
This is an urban cache hidden in a public thoroughfare area.
The cache is accessible from the public area.
There is NO need to access any areas that are private property.
The difficulty rating at 3. Locating the final cache location is more an exercise in thinking than what it is in searching. Think first, look second. Whenever you look please be stealthy, discreet, and unobtrusive.
Of course there is a fairly high pedestrian traffic count on most days. You might consider doing this one in the evenings! But whatever time you visit please DO exercise the utmost stealth when looking for, retrieving and replacing the cache. A replacement for the original, presumably muggled, sited on 3 July 2011.
The cache contains a log book only - please bring your own pen or pencil to sign the log. There is little room for trades.
