Geocache Description:

A very short walk from good parking area off lake Highway

The Steppes a special place in Tasmania's high country. Situated approximately 1 and a half hours from Hobart and Launceston at the junction of the Interlaken and lake Highway. Home of James Wilson family for over 100 years. Built in 1863 as a Police Station and in 1888 it was incorporated in to a family homestead. A bakery and painting studio are nearby. In 1897 the post office opened and in 1903 the school.

In 1911 St Luke's Church was erected 1 km north of the homestead and was the focal meeting place for all the pioneer Central Highlands residents, for church services, dances, gun club shooting, horse racing & meetings.

Bible texts were painted on the walls of the hall by Madge Wilson a keen artist and wood carver. The hall is still used for community functions and is looked after by a voluntary non profit committee.

One km south of the homestead are the world famous Stephen Walker Steppes Sculptures representing images of pioneer life in the highlands, set in dolerite rocks.

The reserve can be accessed by visitors at all times. Toilet facilities and drinking water are available at the house and hall. On your next visit to Tasmania , take a step back in time and visit this unique place.
