Geocache Description:



Mission Statement:  This cache is designed to bring and familiarize cachers to the different areas of the GONIL region and to promote geocaching in its 'classic form' as it first emerged in the nine county area. 

So, do you fancy yourself a traditional cacher?  Do you say you like the classic hides?  Do you pine for the ‘good old days’ of geocaching?  Then this cache is for you.  Prove yourself.  Complete the GONIL Nine County Classic Challenge!

The cache is at the posted coordinates.  Please familiarize yourself with the logging requirements before seeking it out.  Feel free to hunt the cache and post a note if you’d like, but you may not claim a “Found it” until the cache requirements are met.

The requirements are simple.  Post a “Found it” log on 80 of the remaining 100 active caches in the GONIL area, that were placed prior to December 31, 2002.  Then find this hidden ammo box and sign the log.  That’s right, there are only 100 left that have stood the five year test of time.  Eighty-three of these are traditionals and seventeen are virtuals.

 The requirement of eighty is to take into consideration the few that may be MIA, but still listed as active; may require an admission fee; or just to leave some wiggle room as not to make the requirements too restrictive.

When logging your find, please demonstrate your completion of the required 80 smilies by e-mailing us a list of the qualifying caches or create a bookmark list of your finds.  

The Cache is located in the Paul Douglas Preserve and will take you through wetlands, forest and prairie. Parking coords are for the main lot.

Update 9/2008 - GONIL annexed the Counties of Boone, Winnebago, and DeKalb. The active hides in these counties were added to the list, bringing the total to 100.

 Update 5/2010 - The original Nine County classic bookmark list of 100 has waned to 88 active classics.  Some are disabled and others require fees and such.  The list needs to be refreshed in order to keep the field of “active” Classics at approximately 100.

We are adding a Part 2 bookmark list which includes active physical caches placed between January 1, 2003 and February 28th 2003.  This list includes 22 hides that are still active.  Feel free to include any of these in the eighty required caches.  Here is the list of Nine County Classics (Part Two).

 Update 10/2022 - We are adding a Part 3 bookmark list which includes active physical caches placed between May 1, 2003 to September 30, 2003.  This list includes 19 hides that are still active.  Feel free to include any of these in the eighty required caches.  Here is the list of Nine County Classics (Part three).

For those of you who wish to stick with the original concept of active caches placed before 01/01/03, we will accept up to ten "Wildcard options" in the eighty required finds.  "Wildcards" include any other "physical" caches placed prior to 01/01/2003 that are outside of the "Nine County" area.  The only requirement is that they are still active at the time you log the "Nine County Challenge".  Here is a bookmark of some “Wildcards” in the area.   They do not have to be on this list, as long as they meet the criteria. (No virtuals for this option, please)
