This cache is being placed as part of the Moat Mountain
Progressive Challenge Series. Please go to waypoint GC14Z4R for complete rules.
If you choose to take the Moat Mountain Progressive Challenge in
sequence, this will be your last stop before hitting the highest
summit, North Moat, at 3,196' on the 9.7 mile trail. DJ of DJ and
CAL, crashco, adabranlog, and I took the challenge in reverse
because we don't have the best track record for following the
rules.
We were warned not to take the
challenge in the winter with all the snow.
We wound up being the first to
attempt the entire challenge in a mere 13 hours -
approximately 9:00 am to 10:00 pm.
There were two containers buried in
the snow. As we were searching, crashco had a walking stick 6
feet long. There were many places above 2000' that the stick
went all the way into the snow without hitting the ground!
The north approach offers a more gradual elevation gain compared
to the south. We hiked the trail from the north side and hit North
Moat Mountain Summit as the first of four peaks. I added this first
stop in one of two remaining gaps in the pyramid as you head toward
Red Ridge. I placed it about 2 feet above the snow level today so
it may be above your head once all of the snow is gone.
