Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the Beverly Canyon trail (not marked) just off the Desert Classic trail and is about a mile walk (or bike ride) from the Pima Canyon parking lot. It can also be accessed from the Pima Canyon trail with a little more up and down walking. A short scramble from the trail.

THE TAIL OF DESERT NESSIE

I have been walking the trails of South Mountain Park for many years. One day, while coming down the Beverly Canyon trail towards the Desert Classic trail, I spotted what looked the Loch Ness monster. In the desert? As I got closer, I discovered Desert Nessie, rising out of the desert floor surveying her Kingdom. Her body was solid rock and, her head and neck was a saguaro that was probably hit by lightning. She seemed like a nice monster and I walked by her and said hello for several years.

One morning after a heavy rain, I was walking up the trail towards Pima Canyon, when I heard a sharp cracking noise. I stopped, but saw nothing. A few paces later, another sharp crack. I looked up and I heard several more cracks and I watched Desert Nessie’s neck and head come crashing down.

I felt it a privilege to witness that, and that is why I have chosen this location for my first Geocache placement. While she doesn’t look as she did years ago, I still say hi to her as I walk by. You can see pictures of Nessie, as she once was, when you find the cache. It is contained in a small ammo box.

To the best of my knowledge, she never devoured anyone and was a very polite monster. Say hi to her and wish her well.
