Central Pa Mystery - The Drive-In Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

emt160090: Stopped by to check on this one and discovered the hiding location has been destroyed at some point in time. Not sure how long the cover has been missing, but I could not find the log book and I have a feeling that it has been missing for some time

Regardless, I have moved from the area and thus this cache has lived out its use. Time to say good bye to this little cache and open this area up for others to use. Enjoy!

Geocache Description:

A nano cache placed near an interesting piece of history.

NO ROOM FOR ANYTHING OTHER THEN THE LOG... Bring your own Pen/Pencil!

Some may look at this cache's location and think there was some kind of mistake. Others may think this is a joke. But, alas this cache is placed to mark an historical location that is no longer with us.

Here is the facts that I have managed to dig up about this area. A long time ago, in State College history, there was a Drive-in theater at this location. The screen of this theater was located approximately 40 feet due Northeast of the cache location; the projector near the entrance of the nearby retail store. The Temple Drive-in was in operation until late in 1989 when it was removed to make way for the retail development that is currently on the land.

I was only recently, while searching through old deeds and maps of the area, able to find records of the former use of the property.

JBT was able to provide me a link to an article that was in the Collegian on July 21, 1989 which talked about the Theater.

As I am only a few years older then the retailer that is currently the primary lease holder on this property, I do not remember the previous owner, but I can recall the construction that was taking place in that area at the time. I can also recall memories of the farm just east of this location. A former horse farm that is now the home of a few dozen apartment buildings.

This cache is part of the Central PA Mystery Series.

Congratulations to mountainfolk406 for their FTF!

UPDATE as of 10/3/09 - The container is now film canister size. The location is slightly different from the above description. This is now a more typical hide for this type of location.
