25 million years ago this area was hot and humid, covered with lakes and dominated by vulcanos. Here - in the area we now call Stöffel - used to be a lake more than 100 m deep. It was formed as a maar inside of an extinct vulcano. Fish and pollywogs were living in it and there were crocodiles as well as turtles. And there was this special kind of mouse.
After the lake had been there for about 300,000 years a nearby vulcano exploded and covered the lake and its inhabitants with a layer of basalt.
Basalt is a very hard rock which is used for railroad tracks and as a fundament for streets and so the mining of the Stöffel basalt started in the late 19th century.
When the level of the lake was reached, mining stopped and the scientific exploration began in 1990. More than 20,000 fossils have been found by archaeologists. The most prominent is a flyfing mouse.
The abandoned part of the quarry is now open to public access daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you want to visit the site, you can leave your car near the information box. Here you can also find the answers to the questions.
To log this cache, please attach a picture of you and your GPSr near the fossil site to your log and answer the following questions by mail:
a) What's the size of the Stöffel mouse (without tail)?
b) What is the latin name of the Stöffel mouse?
c) How high was Stöffel before the mining began? And what height does your GPSr show at the site?
After you have visited the site you may want to drive to the look-out and have a view from above. Please note that there is no track yet - you will have to go by car.
Short note on fees/access: Access to the excavation site is about 5 €, it might be higher if there is a special Event so make sure to check the parks website before your visti. You do not have to take part in any of the additional guided tours in the quarry or the museum. Access might be restricted at certain times due to blastings in the active part of the quarry. Therefore you are requested to report to the information desk before entering.
Vor 25 Millionen Jahren war diese Gegend heiss und feucht, bedeckt mit Seen und dominiert von Vulkanen. Hier - in der Gegend die wir heute als Stöffel kennen - war ein mehr als 100m tiefer See. Es war ein Maar welches in einem erloschenen Vulkan entstand. Fische und Kaulquappen lebten hier und es gab sowohl Krokodile als auch Schildkröten. Und es gab eine ganz besondere Maus.
Nach etwa 300.000 Jahren explodierte einer der umliegenden Vulkane und bedeckte den See und seine Bewohner mit eine Schicht aus Basalt.
Basalt wird wegen seiner Härte gerne beim Eisenbahn- und Straßenbau eingesetzt und so begann Ende des 19ten Jahrhunderts der Abbau des Stöffelbasalts.
Als sich die Maschinen bis zum früheren See vorgearbeitet hatten, wurde der Abbau beendet und die wissenschaftliche Erkundung begann. Bisher wurden mehr als 20.000 Fossilien von den Archäologen gefunden. Am bekanntesten wurde eine fliegende Maus.
Der aufgelassene Teil des Steinbruchs kann inzwischen täglich von 10 bis 18 Uhr besucht werden. Dein Auto kannst du in der Nähe der Informationsbox parken. Dort findest Du auch die Antworten auf die Fragen.
Bitte füge deinem Onlinelog ein Photo von dir in der Nähe der Ausgrabungsstätte bei und beantworte per Mail folgende Fragen:
a) Wie groß ist die Stöffelmaus (ohne Schwanz)?
b) Wie ist der lateinische Name der Stöffelmaus?
c) Wie hoch war der Stöffel bevor der Abbau begann? Und welche Höhe zeigt dein Navi an der Ausgrabungsstelle?
Nachdem du den Steinbruch besucht hast, möchtest du dir die Gegend vielleicht noch vom Aussichtsturm aus ansehen. Leider führt dort noch kein direkter Weg hin.
Noch ein Hinweis zu Preisen und Zugang: Der Zugang zum Park kostet leider mittlerweile ca. 5 €. An Tagen mit besonderen Veranstaltungen kann der Eintrittspreis höher sein. Bitte prüfe vor deinem Besuch den Veranstaltungskalender. Du musst nicht an einer der zusätzlichen kostenpflichtigen Führungen teilnehmen. Allerdings kann der Zugang manchmal beschränkt sein, wenn Sprengarbeiten im aktiven Teil des Steinbruchs stattfinden. Deshalb musst du dich an der Informationsbox anmelden bevor du den Steinbruch betrittst.
