Geocache Description:

This cache was placed as part of the Menard County Trails & Greenways and the Central Illinois Geocaching Assoication's first Lincoln's Cache Event.

You are looking for a rectangular plastic container.

This impressive bronze statue, was a gift to the people of Illinois by the sculptress, Anna Hyatt Huntington, and Carlton Smith of the National Arts Foundation in 1964. Titled “Abraham Lincoln: On the Prairie,” it represents Lincoln as a young lawyer, studying as her traveled.

You can see this statue of Abraham Lincoln on horseback when you approach the entrance of New Salem State Park on route 97. It's located on the west side of the highway. In 1964 sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington gave this bronze statue to the state of Illinois. It depicts a young Lincoln absorbed in studying, as was typical of him when he lived in this pioneer village.

Henry Dummer, who practiced law in the 1830s, recalled visits from Lincoln: "Lincoln used to come to our office -- Stuart's and mine -- in Springfield from New Salem and borrow law books. Sometimes he walked, but generally rode."
