Geocache Description:

A Home Away From Home.

The Ronald McDonald House stands on the site of historic Fort Sanders, for which the historic neighborhood is named, near where the western fortifications were. On this site, November 29, 1863, the Confederate Army of General James Longstreet assaulted Fort Sanders, attempting to break the hold on Knoxville of Union forces led by General Ambrose Burnside (visit link) Situated atop the hill on which the Fort Sanders neighborhood is located, and heavily fortified by a deep ditch, as well as tangles of trees and telegraph wire, the fort proved impregnable. Confederate losses numbered 813 casualties, to 13 for the Union Army. This was the last serious threat to Knoxville by the Confederates.

In 1903, the property on which the Ronald McDonald House is located was purchased by Professor William Carson, a civil engineer. He built the present house in 1906. He lived in the house with his family, and rented space to students, as well. In the 1940’s the house saw duty as a nursing home, and housed Oak Ridge Manhattan Project workers. Until the early 1980’s the house was rented out to University of Tennessee students.

On April 1, 1983, the house was purchased by Children’s Family House of East Tennessee, Inc, to be used as the Ronald McDonald House. The geocache is placed on the 25th anniversary of that purchase. Today, the Ronald McDonald House, like many similar houses across the country, provides a home away from home for the families of children hospitalized at the nearby hospitals, including East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

The geocache is a rectangular lock and lock dressed all in camo, and containing lots of small trade items.
