It is important to access the cache from the parking lot coordinates identified below. To cut through private property from adjacent subdivisions is not advisable. Adjacent subdivisions are tight-knit communities. They look out for each other and may report "suspicious activity". How do I know? They're my neighbors.
Phantom Forest is a 13 acre tract of land donated to the City of Des Peres in 1994 by Clara Moore, and is a part of the Urban Wildacres Program which preserves and maintains natural woodlands which would otherwise be lost to redevelopment in urban areas.
Clara Moore was the wife of author and illustrator Ray Moore. Ray Moore was born in Montgomery City, Missouri, and attended the Saint Louis University. After doing commercial work, he entered the field of comics. Moore is best known for his drawing work on 'The Phantom'. This adventure comic was first published in 1936 and immediately became very popular. It was awarded a place in the Sunday Pages in 1939. Ray Moore had to quit the comic in 1942 to serve in the US army. In 1945, he made his comeback, but suffering too much from various war wounds, he left the comic world in 1949. Not funny.
Little is known about Ray's personal life. He was the son of a jeweler and originally intended to become an engineer before he realized that he could live as an artist.
Ray was involved in an accident during his career as a pilot in World War II, which made him unable to keep on drawing The Phantom. He therefore left the work on the strip to his assistant Wilson McCoy.
Ray Moore had a moody and mysterious drawing technique, with a style of shadowing which suited the mysterious Phantom character. He slightly changed his style later on focusing less on the dark atmosphere he had become known for in favor of a more realistic style which included more details and a less moody style of drawing.
Ray Moore died in 1984 of natural causes. He was survived by his wife, Claire, who passed away in 2005.
